All women athletes, no matter their size, should wear good-fitting athletic bras that support them well.

First, know your correct bra size. Get a proper fitting from a local lingerie store or from a specialty sports store that carries a wide selection of sports bras. Be sure to measure around the band, across the fullest part of the breasts to get the right cup size and also over the shoulders.

If you practice a high-impact sport, consider getting your sports bra from a specialty sports store that carries lots of styles and manufacturers. These vendors are more likely to have a wider selection than a standard lingerie or department store. High-impact sports such as running require bras that provide maximum support, in order to minimize the movement of your breasts. To find out how well an athletic bra supports your breasts, jog in place while in the dressing room. Try on a different style if your breasts move too much.

Always try on a variety of bra styles from different manufacturers. Every woman has different needs in sports bras and different styles meet different needs. For instance, large-breasted women (D cup or higher) should look for encapsulation athletic bras to minimize movement. Women who wear A to C cups can wear compression bras that will support them well.

Also check the fabric label when picking athletic bras. Look for styles with good moisture-wicking fabric to draw perspiration away from the body. At the same, also look for fabric that will provide shape and support.

When trying on sports bras, look for the style and fit that is snug, but still allows you to take deep breaths. Don’t make the mistake of choosing a bra that fits tightly around the rib cage, thinking it will support you better. You’ll only cut off your precious air supply, crucial when exercising.

Take good care of athletic bras by following the cleaning directions on the label. Replace your bras when the elastic loses its stretch; an athletic bra without the stretch is not capable of supporting your breasts anymore.
